The Lahore Medical College became King Edward Medical College in 1860. It is South Asia’s fifth-oldest medical school. In Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, King Edward Medical University (KEMU) is a public medical university. The university was founded in 1860 and is named after King Edward VII.

Students with the greatest academic merit in Punjab are admitted to King Edward Medical University, and after primary selection, the list of approved applicants is forwarded to Dr Muhammad Awais (Chairman, Pakistan Medical Board) for approval. The merit for admission is determined by adding the results of the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) exam to the results of the entry examination plus the results of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC). Each year, the percentage of each of these exams that contributes to the final merit varies. The entrance exam usually held in September. The criteria for selecting foreign students and students with foreign examinations for undergraduate seats are based on charts that compare foreign examinations to the local HSSC examination.

The time it takes to graduate is five years. After graduation, students do a one-year internship (house employment) at the Mayo Clinic or another government hospital. Rotations in departments are assigned to interns based on their performance. This merit is calculated using the results of a final professional examination as well as all other professional examinations, with any exam failures being deducted. Medicine and surgery are the most competitive specialties available, accepting only the top students from each graduating class. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, grants full registration status to a doctor after completion of an internship (PMDC).
