The institute was established in 1995 by combining sections of the University of Peshawar. The Institute of Management Sciences (also known as IMSciences) is a government-owned autonomous public-sector institution recognized by the Higher Education Commission Islamabad and operating under NWFP Ordinance No. 2002

The institute sits in Peshawar’s Hayatabad neighborhood and is divided into four faculties: management sciences, computer sciences, information technology, and liberal arts. The government recognizes IMSciences as a seat of excellence, and a Board of Governors was established as a policy-making body to assist its ongoing expansion and success in Information Technology, Business Administration, Public Health, and all linked fields.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) classified it as the fourth-best business school in Pakistan in its rating of public and private universities/institutions. This makes it the greatest business school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
